The Story of Nian
This is a story from the old days in China. People say there is a monster. It has strong arms to catch people. It has a big mouth and sharp teeth to eat them. They call it Nian. Everyone is afraid of it. At night, people close all their doors and windows.
One day, a teacher says, “Listen to me. Nian is afraid of the red colour. Let’s put red paper on our doors, windows and walls. We can also make lots of firecrackers.”
At that night, Nian comes. It sees red lanterns at every home. People light firecrackers. The noise makes Nian so afraid. It runs away and doesn’t come back again. People are happy. They call that day their New Year.
