GeneralDescription

TheAdapterInterfaceCircuit(AIC)isusedtosensethepresenceofanexternalpowersourceforaportablecom-puter.Itnotifiesthecomputerifasourceispresentandindicatesifthesourceisappropriateforchargingbatterypacksinsidethecomputer.TheAICalsosensesanadaptercurrentanditsdirection.AICisolatestheadapterandsignalsthecomputerwhenpeakcurrentthresholdisexceeded.LM2601drivesP-channelFETs.NohighcurrentratedSchottkydiodeisrequiredtoimplementanadapterswitcho-vercircuit.Thissignificantlydecreasesadditionalheatdissi-pationduringsimultaneousfastbatterychargingwhilerun-ningacomputer,particularlyinMaximumPerformancemodeofoperation

ApplicationInformation

Theadapterinterfacecircuit(AIC)ICprovidesthecontrolfunctionsnecessaryforuseinmatingaconstantvoltageoutputAC-DCadapterorairlineadaptertoanotebookcom-putersystemoraportabledevice.Itallowsoptimalbatterychargingduringcomputeroperation,andallowsbatterydis-chargeforbatterygasgaugecalibration.Itreceivescontrolsignalsfromthenotebookcomputer,monitorsinputcurrentfromtheadapter,providesadaptervoltagestatustothenotebooksystemmanagementmicrocontroller(or″embed-dedcontroller″),andappropriatelydrivesMOSFETswitchestoelectricallyconnecttheadaptertothecomputer.

AICwillallowasystemdesignertosolvevariouspowermanagementtaskstypicalforanadapterpoweredsystemscontainingarechargeablebattery.

Whenanotebookcomputerisbeingpoweredfromabatteryandtheadapterispluggedin,thecomputershouldstartdrawingpowerfromtheadapter,notfromthebattery.Themosttimeefficientchargingscenarioiswhenacomputerdrawsthefullratedcurrentfromaconstantvoltageadapter.Thecomputeruseswhatitneedstorun,andpassesallremainingpowerontothebatteryforcharging.Thecom-putershouldbeabletoautomaticallyrefusetochargeabatterywhenpoweredfromanairplanepowerline.Itmaybe

necessarysometimestohaveacomputerfullydischargingthebatteryandthenfullyrechargingit(forbatterygasgaugecalibrationpurposes)whilebeingpoweredbyanACadapter.AICwillalsoallowacomputertopreventbackfeedingcur-rentintoanadapteriftheadapterisnotpoweredwhilebeingpluggedintothecomputer(someofexistingadapterscandrawcurrentfromthecomputerunderthisconditionsforchargingtheACadapteroutputbulkcapacitancefromthecomputerbattery).

Whilethelowestusableadaptervoltageisabout9.5V,thatisVADAPTER=11.7Vminus2.2Vhysteresis,AICisoperationaldowntoVADAPTER=5V.ThismeansthatAICwillnotgen-eratefalsereadingsdowntoVADAPTER=5V.SuchfalsereadingswouldbeMPS=HIGH,ADAPTERPRESENT=HIGH,CHARGERPRESENT=HIGH.

AICdeterminesusablevoltagerangesbycomparingVADAPTERwithaninternal2.5Vvoltagereference(seealsoElectricalCharacteristics).AICdetectsoperatingcurrentlimitandleakagecurrentlimitintotheadapterjackbydifferentialsensingacrosscurrentsenseresistorRSENSEeitherdirectlyorscaleddownbyresistordividersR1/R3andR2/R4.
