The Objective of Study

After entering colleges, students hold quite

different opinions about the destination of study. Some of them hold that having a diploma is certainly the objective of study in college. In

their opinion, the diploma will guarantee favorable opportunities in the job-hunting campaign. This idea may be the reason why their college lives are almost focused on reading books, which helps them pursue decent scores in exams.

But a good many college students are inclined to challenge this belief. They argue that it is the most important to develop the personal interests

and specialties in the college study. For thispurpose, they often have every reason to pride themselves on excellent academic achievements in the subjects they take great interest in, while they may flunk in other courses in which they seem rather uninterested.

For my part, I think it is quite necessary that we develop wide interest in computer, foreign languages or any other practical disciplines rather than just confine ourselves to textbooks. Only in this way can we keep on learning throughout our lifetime and always keep pace with the times.

Reading Selectively or Extensively

1. 有人认为读书要有选择 2. 有人认为应该博览群书 3. 我的看法

Reading Selectively or Extensively?

As is well known, ours is an age of knowledge explosion. As a carrier of knowledge, new books are turned out every day. Hence, there has arisen a debate concerning the strategy of

reading. Some people think that we should read selectively. They argue that there are too many books in too many fields for us to finish, even if we devote all our time and energy to reading.

Therefore, we must choose few canonical books to digest. Others hold the opposite opinion. They

maintain that we should read extensively so as to broaden our horizon and seek an all-round development. They argue that only by doing that can we adapt ourselves to our age and survive in the fierce

competition. So they dip into everything

and try to become a jack of all trades. In my opinion, their arguments

are just the two sides of the same coin. To overcome the one-sidedness of either point of view, a combination of the two would be desirable. In other words, we should read both selectively and extensively.

It Pays to Be Honest

1. 当今社会上存在许多不诚实的现 象

2. 诚实利人利己,做人应该诚实It Pays to Be Honest Honesty is the chief and most honored

virtue in this country. Being dishonest is, for

Chinese, a shameful thing. However, to my dismay, more and more people are seen engaged in open and rampant dishonest activities nowadays. It seems that people no longer cherish honesty. Students devise various strategies to cheat in examinations, write false resumes in job-hunting, etc.. Businessmen wouldn't stop selling fake and inferior commodities unless they are caught. Athletes desire to get an advantage over

competitors by adopting stimulants. In a word, dishonest phenomena exist in every corner of the society. However, I still value honesty because being honest benefits all of us. For instance, if

businessmen are honest in product promotion or sale, their customers will get genuine satisfaction and will return to buy more, which is a win-win

situation. We are partners in this interdependent world. If we could compete and cooperate in an honest manner, that is to say, on an equal footing, all of us would reap huge benefits and achieve greater success sooner or later.

In conclusion, it pays to be honest. I sincerely hope that people from all walks of life would be honest in their daily lives. On Challenge

The year 2008 has witnessed China

undergoing numerous challenges. To begin with, Beijing will host the 2008 Olympic Games. China is taking up the challenge to do her best to ensure that the Olympics is a success. Secondly, after the May 12th Wenchuan earthquake, China is confronting rebuilding both the disaster-hit regions

and the quake survivors’ confidence. China is also under great pressure to reap the harvest of another year’s sustainable

economic development, which will be vital support for her rising from adversity to

prosperity in 21st century. When it comes to us individuals ,

we usually face challenges of one kind or another which lie throughout almost every stage of our personal development -to get enrolled into our dreaming higher university; to seek an ideal job; to get promoted ,to

name but a few. Confronting challenges, different

people have different ideas. While

pessimists are afraid of and conquered by challenges, thinking there comes the end of the world and losing all hope, optimists remain cheerful, accepting challenges and turning them into impetus. As for me , I hold that challenges ,if treated properly, often lead to success and prosperity. It could be supported by lots of successful people’s experiences both in old days and nowadays, both at home and abroad.

My View on Reference Books

1. 各种各样的参考书给学生们的学习 提供了一定的帮助。

2. 但是过分依赖参考书会产生许多负 面效应。

3. 我认为……

Nowadays students constantly find themselves

flooded with all kinds of reference books. Reference books themselves are of no harm. Generally speaking, most of them (1) are helpful and beneficial to our studies. For example, (2) when we are teaching

ourselves a foreign language, good reference books

are really a good teacherHowever, depending too much on reference books has many negative effects. To begin with, (3) armed with keys to all the questions, some students seem to know all, and then they will be less attentive in class. Besides, (4) some reference books published in such haste that they occasionally provide students with wrong answers, thus making students confused about some knowledge. Worst of all, (5) merely copying from the reference books, students gradually become lazy and get into passive learning habits which will definitely do great harm to their creativity.

In my opinion, we should (6) make proper use of the books and never overuse them by merely copying without thinking.

College English Teaching in China

有人认为中国的大学英语教学很不成功(如: 大学毕业生英语说不好,听不懂,写不出) 认为失败的原因是…… 你的建议

College English Teaching in China

Nowadays, there are more and more people complaining that English teaching at college is a complete failure. After four-year English learning, most graduates can’t properly communicate with foreigners, nor can they translate between languages, let alone write in English.

To some extent, I think, it is reasonable for those people to say so. To begin with, English teaching at college is, to a large degree, teacher-centered. (It is not uncommon in the classroom that the teacher explains every language point in detail, while studentstake notes at times.) Secondly, culture is neglected in English teaching because of poor text design. (With a great deal of grammar and structure exercises in the textbook, students are misled into memorizing a large vocabulary and a lot of English rules. Few students know how, when and where to use them properly.) Finally, test-oriented education, in a sense, misleads and impedes college English teaching in China. For instance, college English Test Band Four/Six is so overemphasized in some colleges that teachers strive to meet the needs of the test, sacrificing learning for the sake of test results, and students only

learn how to pass the examination. In conclusion, Chinese college English teaching is to be reformed. English teaching should be student-centered, culture should be introduced in language teaching, and textbooks should be well designed to arouse students’ interest in learning to communicate in English.

How to Succeed in a Job Interview 1 面试在求职过程中的作用

2.取得面试成功的因素:仪态举止谈吐专业知识自信实事求是 How to Succeed in a Job Interview

Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview by both the employer and the applicant. The interview, so to speak (可谓,可以说), has become indispensable for getting a satisfactory job. On one hand, the interviewer can take advantage of the occasion to learn about the candidates, such as their work experience, education and their personalities, so as to pick out the right candidates for the company. On the other hand, the interviewee can make use of the opportunity to get to know the job he is going to take up, the credibility of the firm, and the working conditions as well. Excellent performance in it will enable the would-be employee to secure the job. But how can one succeed in it? Faced with an interview, we should take some

effective measures to ensure it a success. The

First key factor is that the interviewee has to pay attention to his or her appearance. Though we can never judge a person by his appearance, the first impression is always where we start. Anther

important factor is that good manners are equally important. The interviewee has to be neither too proud nor too timid. Just be courteous.

Furthermore, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and knowledge about the job-related areas. Lastly but not the least, the interviewee must express himself clearly and confidently on the condition of honesty, for

honesty is the best policy. To sum up, the job interview is indeed important. There is

no need to be nervous, however, if the interviewee has made full preparations for it and given a fairly confident and honest performance, his or her success can be ensured.

Air Pollution and Cancer

The graph shows the great changes in the number of cancer sufferers from 1950 to 1990. The percentage of cancer sufferers went up by 0.08% from 1950 to 1975. However, the number of people suffering from cancer has gone down by 0.09% from the year 1975 to 1990. The changes

provide us much food for thought. The data can be argued for several reasons. During the

first 15 years, with the development of economy, the air was seriously polluted. At that time, questioning the quality of the air that people breathed became less important than worrying about the money they earned. After 1975, people began to realize that they have to pay clearly for their mistake. Authorities have done a lot to prevent air pollution. For example, many factories which polluted the air seriously have been closed down. That’s why the percentage of cancer dropped since then on.

There is still a long way to go for combating air pollution. We are in the hope that new and great progress will be made in the future, and people can live a healthier life.

A letter of Complaint Dear Editor,

I’m a college student. I’m writing to complain about the poor service I received from Bright Bookstore. Last Sunday I bought an English-Chinese Dictionary from the bookstore. But when I used it in the following days, I found it’s really poor in quality with many printing errors and even several missing pages. It doesn’t deserve the money. I decided to return it to the bookstore and ask for a refund. However, to my unpleasant surprise, the service manager was ill-mannered and retorted me impatiently, “Why didn’t you check it carefully before you decided to buy it?”… “How could I know you hadn’t used it?” I protested. “Then you’re the one to blame. You can only change it for another copy,” he suggested coldly. “But in view of its poor quality, I don’t want it any more,” I argued. “No way,” he shrugged and turned to attend to

other clients. Annoyed and depressed, I decided to resort to you for

help. I think first it’s irresponsible of the bookstore to sell poor books; second, it should treat its clients with good manners and provide satisfactory solutions. This is not a rare

phenomenon in the service industry. Are they serving people or being served?

Sincerely yours, Liu Qiang

Marriage and Partner Relationship

Marriage is certainly one of the most beautiful dreams of life. In this highly competitive society, it is a harbor of grownups. Whenever one is in trouble, he may go back home to be comforted by his beloved one.

Marriage is beneficial for both parties. Though the marriage license is only a piece of paper, it ensures the legitimacy of the relationship between a man and a woman. However, some people think that one must take on the never-ending responsibilities and obligations and mind chores of the family. They believe partner relationship is much relaxing. They won’t have any heart burden. What’s more, it is also quite romantic to meet only on weekends. But although it is romantic, it often produces an awful sense of imperfection. When it breaks up, one party will be deeply hurt by love.

As far as I am concerned, I’d like to have a family when I am sufficiently prepared for a successful marriage. Before

that, I would choose to live with a partner, and then make the lifestyle of Dinks. But as long as we love each other, life could be equally beautiful.
