The Person I Admire Most - Yuan Longping

Have you ever heard of Yuan Longping? He's this really amazing scientist from China who dedicated his whole life to developing better kinds of rice that can feed more people. I first learned about him in science class, and the more I found out, the more I admired him. Let me tell you why he's so awesome! First of all, Yuan Longping grew up on a farm, so he knew from a young age how important rice is for people in China and around the world. Lots of families didn't have enough to eat back then. Can you imagine going hungry a lot as a kid? I can't even fathom that. Anyways, that inspired Yuan Longping to want to figure out ways to grow more rice per acre of land.

But it wasn't easy at all. Yuan Longping tried crossing different varieties of rice plants again and again over many years. He faced so many failures and setbacks. Other scientists laughed at his ideas and said he was wasting his time. I don't know if I could have kept going if everyone made fun of my work like that. But Yuan Longping never gave up because he was so passionate about his goal.

Finally, after working pretty much non-stop for years, Yuan Longping had a major breakthrough in 1973. He managed to breed the first varieties of \"hybrid rice\" that produced much higher yields than regular rice. This was a huge, huge deal that helped increase food supply drastically in China and other countries.

But Yuan Longping still kept on researching after that to develop even better hybrid rice strains. He wanted to create rice that could grown in tougher conditions like drought or parasites. By 2017, his hybrid rice was planted on over 25% of China's total rice-growing areas! Isn't that just mind-blowing? And thanks to Yuan Longping's work, China was able to feed 80 million more people per year without needing extra land for farming. That's like the entire population of Germany getting extra food! What I admire most about Yuan Longping though is his humility and how he never stopped learning. Here's this super famous Chinese scientist who has been awarded so many honors like the World Food Prize and the Medal of the Republic. You'd think he might get a big ego, right? But in interviews, Yuan Longping always gave credit to his team and remained curious about improving his inventions. Even into his 90s, he was still working hard to further increase rice yields.

Yuan Longping's story shows that if you stay dedicated and keep persisting at something important, you can achieve amazing things over time despite all the obstacles. And his hybrid rice innovations have literally helped feed hundreds of millions of people! How incredibly inspiring is that?

I really look up to Yuan Longping's drive, resilience, humility and concern for helping others. His work had such a massive positive impact on reducing global hunger and poverty. I hope that when I grow up, I can find something I'm that passionate about and contributing something meaningful like he did. Even though Yuan Longping passed away in 2021 at age 91, his incredible legacy will live on forever.

In today's world, we face so many serious challenges like climate change, disease, and conflict. We need more people with Yuan Longping's spirit of using science to benefit humanity. His lifelong quest to develop better rice is a shining example of how perseverance and innovative thinking can create progress. He's an inspiration to all young people who dream of making the world a better place through hard work and discovery.

So those are the reasons why Yuan Longping is the person I admire most. He saw a huge problem of hunger and food scarcity, and instead of just accepting it, he dedicated himself to

finding a solution over decades of research. Through pivotal hybrid rice breakthroughs, he dramatically increased food availability while showing amazing humility and commitment to keep improving his inventions. Yuan Longping truly changed the world for the better through science, and his life story motivates me to work hard on important challenges too. I hope you can see now why this man deserves such immense admiration and respect.
