My Hero: Yuan Longping

Who is your hero? When people ask me this question, I always say the same name - Yuan Longping! He is the father of hybrid rice, and one of the greatest scientists in China. To me, he is an amazing person who has helped feed millions of hungry people around the world. Let me tell you why I admire him so much.

Because of Yuan Longping's work, millions of people who might have gone hungry were able to get enough to eat.

Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in a small village in Hunan Province. When he was young, his family didn't have a lot of money and they often didn't have enough food to eat. Yuan saw how difficult life was for poor farmers, and he decided he wanted to help them by finding ways to grow more food. Even as a little kid, he was curious about plants and how they grew.

After finishing school, Yuan went to university to study agriculture and plant breeding. Back then, most people didn't think it was even possible to create hybrid rice plants. Have you ever wondered where rice comes from? You may think it just comes from the store, but it actually comes from farms where it is grown by hard-working farmers. And do you know who helped make it possible for farmers to grow much more rice to feed billions of people around the world? My hero, Yuan Longping!

Yuan Longping was a brilliant scientist who dedicated his life to creating new types of rice that could produce higher yields. He was born in 1930 in a small village in Hunan Province, China. When he was young, his family was very poor and often didn't have enough food to eat. This inspired him to want to solve the problem of hunger.

In 1953, Yuan entered Sichuan Agricultural University where he studied crop breeding. Even though he didn't come from a prestigious university or family, Yuan worked extremely hard and was very determined to succeed. After graduating, he began conducting research on rice at the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center.

For many years, Yuan experimented tirelessly with

cross-breeding different varieties of rice. His goal was to create new hybrid strains that could produce much higher yields to help feed the rapidly growing population of China and the world.

However, cross-breeding rice is extremely difficult and complex work. Rice flowers are tiny and self-pollinate quickly, making it hard to cross different varieties manually.

Despite facing many failures and setbacks, Yuan never gave up. He spent countless hours hunched over microscopes, meticulously transferring pollen between rice flowers by hand.
