The Day I Got Lost
One sunny Saturday, my mom took me and my little brother to the big mall in the city. We don't go there very often because it's pretty far from our house. But that day, Mom said we could go and get some new clothes for the summer. I was really excited!
The mall is huge, with lots of different stores and restaurants inside. There are even a couple playgrounds and a movie theater. As soon as we walked in, I asked Mom if we could go to the Disney Store first. She said yes, but we had to be quick because she wanted to go to the clothing stores too before they got too crowded.
The Disney Store was amazing as always. They had so many cool toys and stuffed animals. I really wanted to get Buzz Lightyear, but Mom said maybe for my birthday. We couldn't stay too long because there was a lot more shopping to do. After the Disney Store, we went to Old Navy to look for summer shirts and shorts. Mom picked out a bunch of different things for me and my brother to try on. The dressing rooms were
pretty crowded, so it took a while. My little brother started getting fussy while we were waiting.
Once we had picked out the clothes Mom wanted, she said we could walk around for a little bit before going to the next store. She gave me and my brother a snack to munch on while we explored. I saw they had installed a cool new climbing playground right in the middle of the mall. It looked awesome! \"Mom, can we pretty please go play at the playground for a few minutes?\" I begged. She said okay, but we couldn't stay too long.
My brother and I raced over to the playground area. It had all kinds of crazy twisty tubes and obstacles to climb through. We were having a blast crawling through the tunnels and climbing up to the top. I didn't even notice Mom had put down the shopping bags to take a quick phone call.
After what felt like no time at all, I heard Mom calling out. \"Boys! Time to go, we have to get to the next store!\"
I crawled out of the tunnel I was in and looked around, but I couldn't see Mom anywhere. There were so many people walking by, blocking my view. I started feeling a little scared.
\"Mom?\" I called out tentatively. No answer. I walked around the playground area slowly, craning my neck to look for her familiar face. But there was no sign of her or my little brother. My heart started beating really fast as I realized - I was lost! How could I have lost my mom in this giant mall? Tears started welling up in my eyes as I felt pure panic wash over me. I didn't know what to do. Should I ask someone for help? What if they were a bad person trying to trick me? Mom always warned me to never talk to strangers. But I was so scared being all alone.
I decided to walk around the area, hoping to spot Mom nearby. But after circling around twice, I still couldn't find her. I was starting to get tired from walking around so much, and my eyes were soaked with tears.
Just when I thought I would never see my mom again, I heard her voice over the loudspeaker. \"Julian Harris, please come to the mall security office. Your mother is waiting here for you.\" Relief flooded over me. The mall had a security office! Of course - Mom would have gone there if she couldn't find me. I quickly asked a nice-looking lady which way the security office was. She pointed me in the right direction.
I speedwalked as fast as I could toward the security office, wiping my tears away. When I got there, Mom was standing outside looking frantic. As soon as she saw me, her face melted into relief.
\"Julian! Oh thank goodness, there you are!\" She pulled me into a giant hug. \"I was so worried! Don't you ever wander off like that again, young man.\"
I hugged her back tightly, feeling like the luckiest kid in the world to have my mom back. \"I'm sorry, Mom. I thought you were right behind me at the playground.\"
She gave me a stern look but I could tell she was just happy to have found me. My little brother was there too, looking a bit scared himself.
The security guard asked if I was okay and told Mom they had been just about to make an announcement over the loudspeakers again. Mom thanked him profusely for his help. As we walked out of the mall, Mom kept her hands tightly holding on to me and my brother. \"From now on, we're going to have a special system so you boys don't get lost again,\" she said in a worried voice.
I nodded solemnly, never wanting to go through that panicked feeling of being lost and alone again. I was just so grateful to be back with my family. It was definitely the scariest day of my young life, but I learned a very important lesson - to always stay right by Mom's side, no matter what.
