Homosexual couples in New York are being married for the first time after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law permitting same-sex marriage in the state last month. But such marriages, though now legal in New York, remain controversial.

So many couples wanted to be married on Sunday, the first day of legal homosexual marriage in New York City, that local officials announced a lottery (抽签) to determine qualification.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, herself openly gay, witnessed the first two ceremonies of same-sex marriage. She says the same-sex marriage law supports equality. “A law that says every family is as good as every other family; that every family is based on love, and is exactly the way God wants it to be,\" she said. Margie Phelps announced same-sex marriage as a crime against God. She and other Christians from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas came halfway across the country to say marriage is defined by Holy Bible. “The pattern is one man and one woman for life to have children who you raise in the nurture and admonition of the Lord,\" she said.

David Schwartz, a traditional Jew, believes every human being has free choice and the power to rule over their desires. He considers homosexual desire to be wrong. “There’s one God in heaven and earth, and he has ordered for all mankind that they should limit their affections to relationships between a man and a woman in the context of marriage,\" he said.

Douglas Robinson and his partner of 25 years, Michael Elsasser, were in the first group to be married in Manhattan. Robinson says the United States allows religious views to coexist with what he believes is a civil right of same-sex marriage. “You can have different opinions. This is a tent, some people call it a mixture of various different cultures and opinions and the like, so God bless America, and we are proud to be Americans,\" he said.

Margie Phelps believes God will punish New York City for permitting what she believes to be moral decay.

Meanwhile, Nevin Cohen and Daniel Hernandez showed off their marriage certificate. But they said they will not be going on a honeymoon. They say they need to be at work in New York on Monday.

When it es to artificial cloning, there are three different types: gene cloning, reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning.

Gene cloning produces copies of genes or segments of DNA. Reproductive cloning produces copies of whole animals. Therapeutic cloning produces embryonic stem cells for experiments aimed at creating tissues to replace injured or diseased tissues.

Gene cloning, also known as DNA cloning, is a very different process from reproductive and therapeutic cloning. Reproductive and therapeutic cloning share many of the same techniques, but are done for different purposes.

Gene cloning is a carefully regulated technique that is largely accepted today and used routinely in many labs worldwide. However, both reproductive and therapeutic cloning raise important ethical issues, especially as related to the potential use of these techniques in humans.

Reproductive cloning would present the potential of creating a human that is genetically

identical to another person who has previously existed or who still exists. This may conflict with long-standing religious and societal values about human dignity, possibly infringing upon principles of individual freedom, identity and independence. However, some argue that reproductive cloning could help sterile couples fulfill their dream of parenthood. Others see human cloning as a way to avoid passing on a damaging gene that runs in the family without having to undergo embryo screening or embryo selection.

Therapeutic cloning, while offering the potential for treating humans suffering from disease or injury, would require the destruction of human embryos in the test tube. Consequently, opponents argue that using this technique to collect embryonic stem cells is wrong, regardless of whether such cells are used to benefit sick or injured people.

The world of public schools has been portrayed many times in films, but usually the school setting is used to either tell a sentimental story or an unpleasant dramatic story about the challenges faced by teachers. A lighter and somewhat more realistic view is provided in a new film about teachers called \"Chalk\". This film, which was shot entirely in Austin, Texas, was the idea of two former teachers.

Two former Austin high school teachers, actor Chris Mass and director Mike Akel came up with the idea for the film and developed the characters together.

The film begins with the statement that 50 percent of teachers leave the profession within three years, which is the issue Mike Akel wanted to explore. \"Chris and I had always heard, 'If you can make it past your third year, you might have a chance.' You know, experienced teachers would tell us that,\" he said.

The film shows the challenges that face teachers, but it does so with a subtle and wry (嘲弄的) humor. \"It is painful and funny. As an artist, I think that is what we are called to do is expose truth in a loving way,\" he said. Chalk was shot in documentary style with actors improvising (即兴创作) most of their lines.

In ing up with the characters and storyline, Mass and Akel drew on their own experiences as teachers and they both have strong feelings about the profession and definite opinions on why the job has bee so hard.

Mass says part of the problem is that teachers today have to pete with a huge world of mass media and movies for the attention of students. \"They want to be entertained all the time and I would tell them, 'look, I love movies, I make them on the side, but you are not here for MTV world.' There is so much media that it makes it hard for a teacher to try to get science across to them,\" he said.

Both Mass and Akel also see lack of discipline at home and a lack of parent interest as a problem in many big city public schools. Akel says teachers often feel parents have abandoned their children at school.

Teachers who have seen the film have provided the filmmakers with positive feedback and Chris Mass says it is especially gratifying to hear the ments from beginning teachers who can identify strongly with the film's characters. \"I think just to be understood as a new teacher, to watch Chalk, and say 'They really capture the teaching world, it does not fix what I deal with day in and

day out, but they really capture what I face.' Sympathy is powerful,\" he said.

Using a patch rather than a needle could transform disease prevention around the world. The new method offered hope of usable vaccines(疫苗)for diseases such as malaria.

The nanopatch overes some of the more obvious disadvantages of needle-given vaccines such as needle phobia (extreme fear) and the possibility of pollution caused by dirty needles. Another major drawback of traditional vaccines is that, because they are liquid, they need to be kept refrigerated between the lab and the clinic.

But there are other reasons why the method could be transformative. This approach holds out hope for easy and large-scale vaccination, as it is applied in dry form, into the skin and then targets a type of immune cell, the Langerhans cell, which lies just a hair's width from the surface of the skin. These cells eagerly take up the vaccine and are able to kick-start the immune response. \"It seems that we may have been missing the immune sweet spot which may be in the skin rather than the muscle where traditional needles go,\" said Prof Kendall.

However, one of the potential issues with skin delivery is the issues of tolerability of the patch in some people. However, if this issue can be overe, the approach does hold out the potential to stop using conventional needle-based delivery.

\"Let's hope for a future where millions of deaths a year from preventable diseases can be a historical record because of radically improved vaccines,\" Prof Kendall said.

Friendship is an in-depth relationship bining trust, support, munication, loyalty, understanding, sympathy and intimacy. These are certainly aspects of life that all of us desire. Being able to trust and relax with your friend is a big part of friendship. Remember when you were young you went with a friend to her grandma’s for the weekend. It was fun but when you got home, home was wonderful. Your feeling was “I am home. I can relax now.” That’s what a friendship should be. You go out into the world and do your best. You have your ups and downs, your problems and triumphs, your fun and tribulations. You charm and perform. Then you e “home’’ to a friend. You can relax, put up your feet; you are relieved. If you still have to be charming and performing, it’s not a relief. Friendship is a fortable situation like home. You get home, kick off your shoes. Relax and sigh, “Aha, home.”

But no one can form a friendship until he/she realizes that the basis of being friends is meeting the needs of the other person. One must be a friend to have a friend. Never forget that friends relate. Relating is the basis of friendship.

innocent(无知的,无辜的)、proud(骄傲的)、dependent(依赖的)均不符合语境。

14. A。该段对比中西餐桌文化的差异,结合下文“At a Western-style dinner, however, the seat that faces the door is…”

15. D。根据下文提示“Usually, the most important guest is seated to the host’s left.”和“At a Western-style dinner, however, the seat that faces the door is … for the most important guest.”,推断此处谈论座位的重要性,be superior to表示“比……重要”,等同于“be more important than”。

16. B。be reserved for sb. “为……而保留(座位等)”,其余选项不符合语义。

17. C。该段主要谈及吃饭时的座位安排,因此选择sit。下文提到“Westerners don’t always like talking at the table.”

19. C。with one’s mouth full

gracefully“优雅地”,cautiously“谨慎地”,curiously“好奇地”。

21. D。通过该句出现的“food, the day’s activities and weather”,不难总结出这些是谈话的“话题”。preferences(偏爱)、alternatives(两者之一的选择)不合适,因为前文并没有出现选择的范围。occasions(场合)与food, the day’s activities and weather不是同一范畴。 22. C。

24. B。not even slightly

The iPhone 5, a touch-screen smart phone, which is the sixth generation of the iPhone, is considered a breakthrough and the best smart phone in the world. ing in two colors, black and white, it preserves almost all of the same design features as the iPhone 4S. However, with more powerful battery, it has 200 hours standby time and 8 hours talk time. What’s more, the camera system inside has been greatly improved, which enables us to take clearer pictures. The most amazing thing is that not only can you order it to undertake some tasks with your voice, such as sending messages, but also it can understand what you say and offer you help.

Friendship is just like a home where you can get fort and relaxation / relief. But in order to keep and form a good friendship, one needs relating / connecting and being ready to help others / satisfying others’ needs. As I enjoy making friends, I value friendship a lot. And I think friendship has a vital impact on our growth. Friendship can turn depression into happiness. With sincere friendship, friends are bound to help each other and live a better life..

I remember in my second year in high school, once on a weekend I fell badly ill. Unfortunately, I lived at school and my parents had no idea of my illness. I had thought about lying in bed all day, thirsty and hungry. But one of my friends had me sent to hospital and looked after me without having a rest, which moved me a lot. It is friendship that gives me a hand when I’m in trouble.

Thus, to my mind, to build up real friendship, we should make friends with those who we can trust, then take our friendship seriously and always get ready to help each other.
