Wuthering Heights

Love is the permanent topic in the world. And also, love is the permanent theme in the novel--creating. Among hundreds of novels, we could easily find that the love--theme novel are in majority. But, for happy love--theme novels, it's always the same happy ending with two lovers being together eventually. However, for melancholy love--theme novels, each has its special sadness. Wuthering Heights is such a special love--theme novel with its unique tragedy.

Wuthering Heights is regarded as one of the greatest and most popular works in the world since it has published written by Emily Bronte, who is the youngest sister of Bronte Sisters. The novel is a story about love and revenge. The story begins with a narrative told by Mr. Lockwood, a tenant of the elderly Heathcliff. As the story progresses, however, he comes into contact with a long-time servant of Heathcliff’s, Ellen Dean, who explains the troubling events that took place many years ago at Wuthering Heights. Throughout the novel, Mr. Lockwood discovers the past love between a mysterious Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff that began after the girl’s father brought him as a boy to live with the family. The love between Catherine and Heathcliff, however, endures great suffering, and the two are eventually torn away from one another. The tragic story, filled with passion and suffering, continues throughout two generations, as told by the old servant woman, many years after the events began.

It is a wonderful book that I read it completely just over a night. Without any doubt, the most impressive part of the novel is the love between Heathcliff and Catherine, which not only showing us the characteristic of Heathcliff and Catherine but also the situation of the society and main value of citizens at that time

Reading the story of the love between Heathcliff and Catherine,I really feel

sympathy and sad to Heathcliff who I think is the most lamentable character in the novel because he lose the chance of getting the true happiness again and again. In that money--worship society, Heathcliff is meant to be a tragic character because of his

low social position. And then, he and Catherine's love is also meant to be a mournful love story because their greatly different social rank and the obstacles the society is bound to set for them. But, even I feel sympathy to Heathcliff, that is not to say I appreciate his reaction after his return to Wuthering Heights. In other words, I even think his reaction is too cruel and abnormal that he is almost crazily mad revenge Hindley, Catherine, Linton and even the innocent next generation, which not only ruins himself, but also destroys the innocent people's happiness ,even more directly leads to Hindley, Catherine and Isabelle's deaths. Seeing his revenges for others, I just think Heathcliff is selfish more or less. And also, how deep his love to Catherine! Briefly, Heathcliff is a dual character with good and evil characteristic.

What about Catherine? Personally speaking, Catherine is a contradictive woman. As a matter of fact, she loves Heathcliff deeply indeed. But she also eagers for the upper--class life and loves vanity. She actually doesn't know what the true love is only when she makes up her mind to marry Linton in order to continue her fancily elegant upper--class life and loses her true lover Heathcliff does she know what she really wants and how important Heathcliff is --.\" Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind--not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being \"she said in the novel. And just as what she said, she loves Heathcliff for a lifetime, he is in her mind forever. Seeing her love to Heathcliff, I am deeply touched by her because if there is eternal love in the world, she has reached to it.

If what Wuthering Heights left me is merely the complex sadness and a deeply sense of touching, I'm afraid that it is not a great enough work . What it has also left me is the reflect upon love in the noisy society of today. More and more people are taking Catherine's old routine of giving up the true love to gain rich--material life. Similarly , they also pay a lifetime to regret losing the only true lover just like Catherine. What an ironic phenomenon! And also what a lamentable thing. When do we become so woeful, so unbrave for true love? Don't we hear the calling full of regrets of Catherine haunting around Wuthering Heights? My dear friends, I truly believe that none of us wants to be Heathcliff or Catherine who lets the chance of getting true happiness slip through our finger but pay lifetime to find it all over the

world. So while we love ,let's love bravely and responsibly. Let's love firmly and eternally!
