第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

In 1983 a Presidential committee warned that \"the educational foundations of our society are presently threatening our very future as a nation and a people.\" More than two decades later, that report, \"A Nation At Risk,\" is still suitable for this situation.

America's schools are failing us. They're not preparing enough young people to succeed in the 21st-century. Standardized test scores say student achievement is quite low. But those scores don't tell the whole story of this appearing crisis. Consider that: nearly 30 percent of students don't graduate from high school

40 percent of college freshmen need special classes because they are unprepared while U.S. students outrank(等级高于) many of their international peers(同等的人), high-schoolers aren’t so lucky .

Sadly, more and more young adults aren't ready for college or work -- or for life. They're not getting the skills to compete in today's rapidly developing \"knowledge economy,\" even as other countries grow more competitive. By standing still, we're falling behind.

So, a good first step: Lift our expectations for what each child is capable of learning. A solid second step: Adopt national education standards that emphasize core studies -- math, science, English and history -- and measure results with national testing. In an age when learning a technique requires as much smarts as understanding a textbook, all students need the same base of knowledge, whether or not they will go to college.

And a third step: Give vocational training the respect it should get. Not everyone should be on a college track -- and a strong vocational curriculum(课程) might just lower that 30% of high school dropout rate(辍学率).

No single fix -- higher standards, charter schools(特许学校), revising funding formulas, merit pay for teachers -- can magically solve our educational deficits(赤字). What's needed is a systematic, national strategy that combines the smartest reforms -- and takes brave risks. 56. Which of the following is true of Paragraph 1?

A.That report, \"A Nation At Risk,\" has nothing to do with the present situation in America. B.The American educational system is doing great harm to the nation’s and its people’s future. C.The1983 report is too old for the present situation.

D.America's schools are not suitable for the present situation. 57. The author’s attitude toward America's schools is that of ______.

A. unconcern B. sympathy C. tolerance D. dislike 58. We can learn from the last paragraph that __________.

A. the problems of the present America's schools cannot be solved in only one way B. to solve the financial problems is to solve all the problems of America's schools C. a systematic, national strategy can make it D. the smartest reforms may be effective 59. What is the text mainly about?

A. Emerging Crisis B. Fixing America's Schools

C. The happy life of American schoolers D. The basic needs of children’s education.

Different exercise types have different purposes and different benefits. One type of exercise may not

accomplish all goals of being physically fit: a healthy heart, strong muscles and bones, and safety from injury. As a result, it is important to do enough types of exercise to have all the physical benefits. Here is a quick check

3

sheet.

Aerobic Exercise: To have a strong and healthy heart, you need to do aerobic exercise. This means that you need to exercise yourself enough so that your heart rate, while exercising, is 65 percent to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. If you don’t get your heart rate up within this level—you just aren’t working hard enough. Whatever you do, your heart rate needs to be 65 percent to 85 percent of your MHR for 20 to 30 minutes, at least 3 times a week. Typical types include: * Running

* Walking (at least 4 to 4.5 mph) * Swimming * Biking

* Elliptical Training(椭圆运动) * Yoga

Strength Training: To keep your muscles and bones strong, you need to do strength training. This comes in a variety of forms. Whatever you do, however, you need to train your muscles enough so that they are really tired by the end of each session. To see real benefits, make sure you are strength training 2 to 3 times a week for about 30 to 40 minutes. Typical types of strength training include: * Weight Training * Yoga

* Resistance Training

* Plyometrics(肌肉增强训练)

Flexibility Training: To keep your body flexible, reducing risk of injuries and pain in your joints and muscles, you need to do flexibility training. You should always aim to stretch every muscle after any exercise routine. Typical types of flexibility training include:

* Stretching * Yoga

* Pilates(普拉提课程)

So next time you think that yoga 5 times a week will be enough, think about what it is really doing. Is it getting your heart rate up? Are you making up your strength? Are you keeping your muscles flexible? 60. After reading this passage, we know that ________.

A. Yoga is really better for people than running B. The more exercise you do, the better

C. Flexibility training helps you build up your muscles

D. The three kinds of training are consistent with one another

61. Which of the following is closest in meaning to “session” in Paragraph 3?

A. meeting B. gathering C. period D. term 62. The paragraph following this article may discuss_______.

A. how to find a good workout dealing with two or three of these goals B. how to choose an exercise type C. how to build up our strength

D. how to be more flexible

Not only does water exist on the moon, but it has been uncovered by the bucketful — about 24 gallons' worth. It was the intentional crash of the NASA’s mission — in two separate stages — on Oct. 9 that made the discovery possible. The first piece of our craft crashed into the floor of a hole some 60 miles from

4

the moon's south pole. Then, about four minutes later, the second part of the craft smashed down.

At the time, viewers from Earth were disappointed. They had been told — incorrectly, as it turned out — that they would be able see the impact through large amateur telescopes. Reporters were frustrated because, no actual information was available right away. It took a month to get the major news that there is, in fact, water on the moon.

But the discovery was worth the wait. Analysis of the water ice may give scientists a long look at

environmental history: any ice would have been there for a long, long time — billions of years, even. On Earth, for example, scientists get their best information about the planet's climatic history from ancient air trapped in polar ice. Similarly, the lunar poles are record keepers of conditions over long periods.

The moon's ice might have come from comet impacts, which would date back to the earliest days of our solar system; that ice would hold a record of the formative times. But the ice could have also been formed by particles from the sun, which gradually combined with lunar minerals to form water, then ice. Or it might have come from Earth, perhaps in the extremely large collision that created the moon in the first place. Whatever its origins, the prospect of studying is really exciting.

In addition to its historical significance, water on the moon holds prospects for the future. If humans are going to establish a long-term presence on the moon, they will need water to drink, and a local supply would be a lot more convenient than getting it from Earth. Beyond that, water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen — the former makes pretty good rocket fuel, and the latter is useful for breathing.

Scientists still have to figure out how thinly the water ice is spread in the lunar rock and soil and how deeply it's buried. That analysis is on the way, and so is the full report on all the other material that was blasted into the air on impact. Stay tuned and there are plenty of updates to come. 63. What would be the most appropriate title for this passage?

A. Analysis of the moon’s ice B. The moon, our future home C. There is water on the moon D. Significance of the moon’s ice . Where can we find this passage?

A. In a newspaper. B. In a magazine. C. In a broadcasting script. D. At a website. 65. How many possible sources does the ice originate from?

A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five 66. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A. Humans can soon establish a long-term presence on the moon. B. The ice on the moon may be drunk directly by humans. C. The water on the moon is significant for our future. D. People now can use the water on the moon to

Little Claus and big Claus

Meanwhile the old grandmother of Little Claus died. Very sorry, he took the dead woman and laid her in his warm bed to see if he could bring her to life again. There he determined that she should lie the whole night, while he seated himself in a chair in a corner of the room as he had often done before. During the night, as he sat there, the door opened, and in came Great Claus with a hatchet(斧头). He knew well where Little Claus's bed stood, which he went right up to, and struck the old grandmother on the head, thinking it must be Little Claus.

\"There,\" cried he, \"now you cannot make a fool of me again;\" and then he went home.

\"That is a very wicked man.\" thought Little Claus; \"He meant to kill me. It is a good thing for my old grandmother that she was already dead, or he would have taken her life.\" Then he dressed his old grandmother in

5

her best clothes, borrowed a horse and a cart of his neighbor. Then he placed the old woman on the back seat, so that she might not fall out as he drove, and rode away through the wood. By sunrise they reached a large inn, where Little Claus stopped and went to get something to eat. The landlord was a rich man but he tended to lose his temper.

\"Good morning,\" said he to Little Claus; \"you have come early today.\"

\"Yes,\" said Little Claus; \"I am going to the town with my old grandmother. She is sitting at the back of the wagon, but I cannot bring her into the room. Will you take her a glass of mead(蜂蜜酒)? But you must speak very loud, for she cannot hear well.\"

\"Yes, certainly I will.\" replied the landlord; and, pouring out a glass of mead, he carried it out to the dead grandmother, who sat upright in the cart. \"Here is a glass of mead from your grandson.\" said the landlord. The dead woman did not answer but sat quite still. \"Don’t you hear?\" cried the landlord as loud as he could.

\"Here is a glass of mead from your grandson.\"

Again and again he shouted it out, but as she did not move. He flew into a passion and threw the glass of mead in her face. It struck her on the nose, and she fell backwards out of the cart, for she was only seated there, not tied in.

\"Hallo!\" cried Little Claus, rushing out of the door, and seizing hold of the landlord by the throat. \"You have killed my grandmother. See, here is a great hole in her forehead.\"

\"Oh, how unfortunate,\" said the landlord, wringing his hands. \"This all comes of my bad temper. Dear Little Claus, I will give you a bushel(蒲式耳,谷物计量单位) of money. I will bury your grandmother as if she were my own. Keep silent, or else they will cut off my head, and that would be disagreeable.\"

So it happened that Little Claus received another bushel of money, and the landlord buried his old grandmother as if she had been his own. When Little Claus reached home again, he immediately sent a boy to Great Claus, requesting him to lend him a bushel measure. \"How is this?\" thought Great Claus; \"Didn’t I kill him? I must go and see for myself.\" So he went to Little Claus, and took the bushel measure with him. \"How did you get all this money?\" asked Great Claus, staring with wide open eyes at his neighbor's treasures. 67. All of the following are wrong except____________.

A. It was great Claus who killed little Claus’s grandmother by accident B. It was the landlord who killed little Claus’s grandmother on purpose C. Little Claus laid his grandmother in bed to draw Great Claus’s attention D. Little Claus tricked the landlord out of a bushel of money 68. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A. Great Claus had been tricked by Little Claus before

B. It was a good thing for Little Claus that his grandmother was killed by Great Claus C. It was easy for the landlord to lose his temper

D. The dead woman did not respond to the landlord because she didn’t sit well 69. What does the underlined part probably mean?

A. was passionate for B. was crazy about C. got angry with D. suddenly hit her 70. Why did Little Claus send a boy to Great Claus?

A. He sent the boy to Great Claus to lend a bushel measure to Great Claus.

B. He sent the boy to Great Claus to show him that he wasn’t dead and had got much money. C. He sent the boy to Great Claus to kill him.

D. He sent the boy to Great Claus to find out the reason why Great Claus had meant to kill him. 第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题l分,满分l0分)

GDP ranking no reason to celebrate

6

The foreign media report that China may soon surpass Japan to become the second largest economy in the world. The source of this excitement is a recent remark by Yi Gang, vice director of China's central bank, who said our economy has already overtaken that of Japan's, based on GDP in the second quarter of this year.

This is another milestone in China's economic rise over the past 30 years. There is really no reason for China to celebrate, however. GDP alone does not give a full picture of the Chinese economy or its place in the world.

According to the World Bank, China's per capita(人均) income ranked only 124th in the world last year. On a per capita basis, our GDP is only 10 percent of Japan's.

While the number of Chinese billionaires continues to make news at home and abroad, the gap between the rich and the poor and between urban and rural areas continues to threaten China's growth and stability.

Whether it has the second or third largest economy in the world, China faces many challenges, some of which have built up over the past 30 years.

Clearly, we have made many errors in our rush toward industrialization, urbanization and modernization. While officials strive to achieve higher and higher GDP and businessmen pile up more and more wealth, the nation as a whole does not always benefit.

China is already among the largest consumers of energy in the world. Our hunger for natural resources has passed that of most other countries. China is expected to become the world's largest market for luxury goods within five years; the number of Chinese traveling abroad will soon exceed that of any other nation.

Meanwhile, China faces tremendous difficulties in controlling its greenhouse gas emissions. Our per capita average is already approaching that of such developed countries as France. Energy consumption and environmental pollution are also major challenges.

Zhou Enlai once remarked that he was worried Beijing would become as smoggy as London. Forty years later, his fears have been realized; now the battleground has expanded to include the vast rural areas.

Although China is making advances in limiting air pollution from power generation, environmental pollution caused by mining threatens the lives of tens of millions of people.

In the early 1970s, I remember reading about how people in Japan suffered from bone diseases after drinking contaminated water. Today, we hear stories of hundreds or even thousands of children in rural China suffering from heavy metal poisoning.

It will be a long time before life returns to normal in Shanghang, Fujian province, where the Zijin Mining Group in July polluted the drinking water of hundreds thousands of people and destroyed aquatic life.

It is time to reexamine our goals. We must recalculate our growth and our wealth, taking into account the huge health, environmental, and ecological costs we've already paid and are still paying. We need a new economics that takes into account efficiency in the use of all human and natural resources. Concentrating on our total GDP will only lead us astray(迷途的).
